Implement Any Business Policy or Constraint
Every organization is unique. Driving its success can in some cases mean implementing constraints on the private cloud environment.
Administrators can specify groups in the environment:
- Manually by selecting groups of Applications, VMs, Hosts, Storage, etc.
- Dynamically by search criteria, such as “all VM names that start with ‘finance’”
And set policies such as:
- Only deploy and run certain workloads on a specific hosts, clusters, or regions.
- Only run certain workloads on Hyper-V 2012 R2.
As a service provider, keeping end users happy is key. Developers and Application Owners want to know what’s going on with their applications. Cloud Architects want to understand every layer of the stack and their interdependencies. Because Turbonomic “what if” scenarios are based on snapshots of the entire current (or historical) environment, capacity management is more accurate and done more quickly. Business (acquisitions, mergers, growth) and technology (hyper-converged, containers and micro-services, automation and self-service) are continuously changing the environment. How to Plan Using Real-Time Information
In the Plan View, Turbonomic allows you to run and customize different types of plans:
- Projection Plans: Increase workload based on past growth or define a new growth scenario based on business expectations.
- Workload Migration: Move VMs from one cluster or data center to another. Does the new environment have enough supply? If not, how many hosts and/or storage do you need to add?
- Current Environment: Curious about the results of Turbonomic’s automated decisions? This plan answers that question based on the current snapshot of the environment.
- Current Environment, Ignoring Cluster Boundaries: This plan answers what you can gain in terms of efficiency and performance if you allow Turbonomic to move workloads across cluster boundaries.
- Reconfigure Hardware: Answer how workloads will be distributed across your environment, if you reconfigure hosts and/or storage.
Plan Quickly and Easily as You Scale
When running a plan, Turbonomic takes a snap shot of the real-time environment. It then executes any "what if" scenario you define in order to determine how much hardware when.
Automatable Workload Placement
Turbonomic places new workloads based on the current demand for resources in the environment as well as the demand of the new workload. It determines which host to be placed on and which storage to access, ensuring that new workloads do not create resource contention. You can also schedule new deployments for a certain date and time. All placement decisions also abide by business or licensing constraints you’ve previously defined in the Policies Tab.
Deployment Challenges in Private Cloud
Shared pools of resources and self-service create new levels of complexity. Every new VM and container added to the environment is another workload contending for resources, thus affecting existing workloads in the environment. Manual deployment of workloads does not scale. Automated scripts are threshold-based and one-dimensional (only consider one resource at a time) and ultimately rely on some amount of overprovisioning to mitigate resource contention.
Reserving Capacity for New Workloads
Turbonomic can reserve space in the infrastructure for upcoming deployments. If the infrastructure can no longer support the anticipated load, the software will notify administrators. Upon deployment, the software will identify on which targets (clusters, hosts, and datastores) each new workload should be deployed.
Support Continuous Integration, Continuous Deployment
Allowing the platform to make decisions in real time ensures that infrastructure teams are not bottlenecks in the application deployment and integration process. Application teams can seamlessly provision their own workloads in the cloud management platform of your choosing (vRealize Automation, OpenStack, VMM, Service Now,etc.) without disrupting your environment.
