Over the span of six months, Forbes reviewed thousands of applications before narrowing down the candidates, and ultimately selecting the rankings. Forbes looked at the customers in terms of growth (both in sales and hiring), quality of management team and investors, margins, market size and key partnerships. To refine the search, Forbes selected CB Insights, a Manhattan-based data research firm that specializes in assessing private companies, to measure the candidates’ health by scanning 45,000 sources with its Mosaic software.
