One member of TurboNation has worked both in office and now remotely from his home in Colorado. He wanted to give us some insights on what a ‘day in the life of a remote worker’ is like here.
Give us a rundown: who you are, what you do at Turbonomic and touch on the different roles you’ve held here?
If I had to sum myself up… I have a long history in both retail and the health field, but discovered the world of software QA quite accidentally some years ago and I’ve been in love with the tech sector ever since. When I first joined Turbonomic, I was a member of the Quality Assurance team. My time there was filled with wonderful memories and delightful interactions with the team. However, when I became aware of an opening on our Technical Writing team, I saw it as an opportunity to move laterally into a position that was a new and interesting challenge (You can read more about that, here!) I also thought that my year+ of testing experience would come in handy, and it has. I’ve been a Technical Writer for nearly two years, and I love it!
You used to work in one of our offices, but now you’re remote in Colorado. How’s the experience of working remote been so far?
In a single word, it has been amazing. I have always preferred to work remotely when possible for a multitude of reasons, but no experience has been quite as good as this. Remote work is not rare nor common at Turbonomic, so I take some joy in introducing others to the concept, and try to be an example of remote work success for those coworkers of mine who may want to make the leap, but have not.
Can you give us a high-level rundown on what an average day is like for you?
Well, I start my morning with a 30-second commute down to the kitchen, where I get my first of many cups of coffee. Depending on how I feel, I’ll either get straight to work early, or I’ll wander down to the basement and do a little bit of gaming to wake my mind- either way, it’s often the case that my email is responded to and any outstanding questions on JIRA tickets are answered before the official beginning of my workday.
I always begin my day standing up (Turbonomic was generous enough to purchase a standing desk for my home office, so that I am not always sitting – thanks, guys!), because being active early in the morning helps later on in the day.
I rarely take my lunch hour all at once – more typically, I’ll take half an hour midway through the morning (generally after a slew of meetings, but before I’m ramped up for the day) to enjoy breakfast or coffee with my loved ones.
I then continue to work for the rest of the morning. I believe in the productivity science which states that humans are most productive with frequent breaks. For every 52 minutes of work, I take a ~5 minute break. I’ll use that five minutes in various ways – washing a couple dishes, playing with the cat, or catching up with my partners. This really sharpens my mind when I come back to my desk, and I have yet to ever feel the “2pm slump” once I started working remotely. As a bonus, by the time my day is over, I find that I’ve often cut my after-work chores down considerably!
For lunch, I take the remaining half-hour and usually eat with my partners and enjoy an episode of whatever short show happens to be on Netflix or Hulu, before returning to work. Afternoons tend to be busier, when I answer a lot of impromptu Skype messages and ask quite a few of my own questions in turn.
My day ends roughly when it’s supposed to, but without the added mental stress of finding a good stopping point in order to leave on time to avoid traffic! If I’m “in the zone” at the end of my workday, I just keep going. This isn’t something I was able to do in the office, because staying in the zone for an extra 20 minutes could mean an extra 45 minutes to get home! Often, by the time I got home, I no longer had that feeling of being in the zone- not an issue when I’m right there!

Dallas DeMarr joined Turbonomic since 2015. First he started off working as a QA Engineer in our New York Offices, but after being in this role for a while, he noticed a Technical Writer role opened up and he thought it would be a great lateral career move. In his free time he enjoys playing video games, catching the latest show on Netflix and being with friends and family.
